Unimate — Your college application buddy

I am Siddhant Poddar, a 2nd year Computer Science student in Bennett University. My curriculum for the 3rd semester has a subject called “Design Thinking and Innovation” wherein students have to build innovative projects in teams. I am a part of a team of 4 with Muskan Vaswan, Saumya Tripathi and Akhil Varma. The project developed by us is called Unimate and following is a brief introduction about it.

Unimate is a service aimed mainly towards students, in the form of a mobile application and a website. The sole purpose behind the project is to ease the tiresome process of everything starting from selecting the right college to meeting all the application deadlines and ensuring the swift completion of all the formalities. The two main components of this project corresponding to the motives stated earlier would be a recommendation system and an application tracking system, respectively. In addition, for and during a college application, various exams like SATs, IELTS, CAT, GRE, GMAT need to be excelled in. Unimate aims to contribute here too, for which the developers’ team plans to inform the platform’s users about the already existing agencies which offer help and guidance in these areas. In conclusion, the team seeks a revolution, for the better, in the generally exhausting proceedings involved with university admissions.

The entire experience of this project has been really fruitful as an aspiring developer. During this period of 4–5 months, our team members had a chance at learning many new concepts, implementing them, and also documenting every aspect. Apart from the working code, we made a total of three document submissions including every specific detail about the project, starting from the motivation behind the idea to topics like the business aspect of the product, ethical, legal and moral issues related to the project, etc. The inclusion of these requirements made this subject extensively professional and beneficial for us. Having to adhere to the deadlines made us panic at times but those moments also taught us the importance of having a reliable team. The knowledge and skills demanded by this project were new to all of us but together, we made sure to deliver what we had aimed for. The application as of now isn’t fully optimized but it certainly provides the foundation features.
